Print'RIP-OFF FUEL PRICES ARE HURTING MILLIONS OF UK MOTORISTS AT A DIFFICULT TIME.' ROBERT HALFON MP FOR FAIRFUELUK

"Everybody knows that we need to cut fuel duty, but at least the Government is on the side of the motorist. They have overseen a historic freeze in fuel duty, and cut it by 1% over the last 3 years. Yet the price of petrol remains stubbornly high-it is now 60% higher than it was in January 2009, and 800,000 families spend over a quarter of their income filling up their car." Robert Halfon MP

"We are in an ‘oil shock’. Petrol prices remain high due to the global price of crude oil, which, after inflation, increased by 50% since 2009. Over the past 3 years, I have regularly raised my concerns that companies have kept the cost of fuel artificially high through a number of means, such as creating ‘petrol deserts’. And where oil prices have fallen internationally, companies have been slow to pass on savings to motorists. The news that the European Commission is now investigating some oil-giants over allegations of price-fixing is deeply concerning. Last year, I pushed for the OFT to investigate these practices, but their investigation was limp-wristed. Unfortunately, a lack of competition in the industry and poor regulation has meant that, until now, oil companies have managed to get away with it.

If the allegations are true, oil companies have potentially added thousands of pounds onto the price of fuel for the average motorist. There must be a proper British-led investigation alongside the one by the European Commission, with tough consequences for offenders. This means prison for individuals found guilty of price-fixing, and a windfall tax, with proceeds passed onto the motorist at the pump via lower fuel duty.

Of course, we mustn't forget that tax still makes up 60% of the cost of fuel. With inflation continuing to rise, and wages remaining stagnant, people’s budgets are squeezed. High fuel prices put up the cost of everything. And when 71% of us rely on our car to get to work, owning a car is an expensive essential, not a luxury. So, it isn't surprising that research by the Resolution Foundation shows that people place a drop in the cost of essentials, such as fuel, as the number one thing that could help to improve their standard of living. I am grateful for the work that Quentin Wilson and FairFuelUK have done in supporting me with these campaigns, which has been enormously helpful in increasing pressure on the Government.

I believe the Treasury must go further and continue to cut fuel duty. But I also believe that a major weapon in our arsenal against greedy oil companies is transparency. The price of oil must be published in an accessible way for all to see. But transparency works both ways. That is why I have been working closely with FairFuelUK, pushing for fuel receipts to display how much of a motorist’s bill is made up of tax, and what percentage of that tax is being spent on the roads. This will not only hold big oil companies to account, but will also act as a deterrent for any future increases in fuel duty.

Rip-off fuel prices are hurting millions of UK motorists at a difficult time. The Government must continue to show that it is on the side of motorists. Fuel duty must continue to be reduced, there must be more transparency, and we must give out tough penalties to anyone who has manipulated the price of fuel and in doing so stolen from hard working, struggling UK families."

PrintNURSES HAVE TO RAISE MONEY TO FILL THEIR TANKS IN ORDER TO VISIT SICK CANCER PATIENTS

Are you aware of any local campaigns like this one?

St Clare Hospice in Essex are running a "Give a gallon" Campaign so their Specialist Palliative Care Nurses can effectively visit their cancer sufferers.

The cost of fuel has severely impacted on the Nation's healthcare professionals’ capabilities to drive to their sick patients. FairFuelUK has had hundreds of examples sent in by supporters of how in some cases Nurses have to make a choice as to whether they can afford to see certain of their patients in the community.

Can this be right? And can it be right that they have to raise funds through the public’s "charitable giving” in order to fill up their cars. The cars that represent a lifeline to patients. What do you think? Let us have your comments below.

You can visit www.stclarehospice.org.uk which is in the Constituency of Robert Halfon MP, our Parliamentary Champion fighting for lower fuel duty. Why not "Give a Gallon” donation while you are there?

PrintEMAIL YOUR MP THROUGH FAIRFUELUK

Add your own comments below this post. They are very welcome (11)

With just 3 weeks to the Budget, and growth still ‘flat’ we need to do all we can to persuade the Chancellor to act on Fuel Duty. The Chancellor can change the content of the Budget right up to the last few days before he stands at the dispatch box to present it to the nation.

The FairFuelUK team will be in Westminster next Monday, March 4th to talk to as many MPs as possible. We will be asking them to lobby for a Fuel Duty cut on your behalf. It would be hugely helpful if you could email your MP to ask them to attend our event. It’s vital that we get the chance to see as many MPs as possible.

Clicking the link at the end of this email will produce a simple form that allows you to enter your postcode. It then highlights the name of your local MP. You can then edit the suggested content of the email and click a button to send it directly to your MP.

We need to convince our MPs that a cut in fuel duty will be largely self financing due to the growth it would stimulate

Here is the link to email your local MP: (Please follow the instructions on this link carefully)

PrintFAIRFUELUK BACKS MP'S MOTION FOR OFT FUEL INVESTIGATION. BUT A CUT IN FUEL DUTY IS THE MAIN AIM

Robert Halfon MPFairFuelUK Backs MP's Motion for OFT Fuel Investigation BUT the central and main campaign aim is to get a significant cut in Fuel Duty Taxation in order to stimulate economic growth

FairFuelUK is supporting a Parliamentary Early Day Motion tabled yesterday by Robert Halfon MP which urges the Office of Fair Trading to reconsider Wednesday's shock decision not to hold an full scale inquiry into the UK petrol and diesel markets. The Parliamentary motion notes that the OFT has ignored evidence of market abuse and that over the last ten years the margins for refining, wholesaling and retailing of petrol and diesel have increased by 14 % and 41% respectively.

Quentin Willson, FairFuelUK campaigner, says, ‘Robert Halfon is absolutely right to question the Government on the OFT's decision which shocked the nation. We have whistle-blower evidence that speculators and commodity houses are pushing up the price of oil and it is common knowledge that the UK road fuel market is anything but transparent. Consumers are confused and angry and want to know why oil and fuel prices keep rising when demand is falling.’

Peter Carroll, founder of FairFuelUK said, ‘There’s an old saying – Justice needs to be seen to be done. There’s a parallel here. We need a full scale inquiry to ensure that ‘fairness’ is seen to be done!’

FairFuelUK is supported by over 350,000 members of the public, the RAC with its 7 million members, the 20,000 haulage businesses in the RHA & FTA, the British Bank Aldermore , the Association of Pallet Networks and the Fuelcard Company. The Campaign's primary focuses are to see a significant cut in Fuel Duty (with VAT the total tax approximates to 60% of the pump price), more pricing transparency and for petrol and diesel to be of equal levels of pricing at the pumps.
