PrintTO THE PM "GIVE THE PEOPLE THE DEBATE ON FUEL DUTY AS PROMISED" - FAIRFUELUK

Add your own comments below this post. They are very welcome (2)

The FairFuelUK team has to report some shocking news.

Parliament and the Government seem reluctant to commit to a date for a debate on cheaper petrol & dieselThis is despite our achieving the required 100,000 signatures on the ePetition and despite the best efforts of Robert Halfon MP who champions our cause in the Commons.  The formal decision to allocate the Parliamentary time rests with the Back Bench Business Committee of the House of Commons.  After two meetings of this committee, we appear to be no nearer to securing our debate on this vital issue.  The Chair of the committee has advised that the Government has not given enough time slots to the Committee.

We believe that this situation is outrageous and unacceptable

The hard-pressed families and businesses of the UK that have supported this campaign in their tens of thousands are understandably not too interested in the finer points of who decides what about this debate be it in the Government or the Back Bench Committee.  We feel that between them, the Government and Parliament should come together to do the right thing in this situation –

Give the people the debate on fuel duty AS PROMISED.

We know that you have all done so much to support this campaign.  We know that many of you have been driven to financial hardship and even ruin by the scandalously high cost of petrol & diesel.  We are not giving up on this fight to help you.

To that end, we are asking you to do two things:

  1. Please follow the link to the Number 10 Web site and send an email to the Prime Minister.  We have suggested a form of words below * that you might like to follow.  We imagine that this turn of events will have made many of our supporters very angry indeed.  However, we are urging everyone to keep their emails and letters firm but civil.  We feel that we have no option now but to make the Prime Minister aware that failing to debate this issue will lead to the perception that he, his Government and our Parliament are not responding to the petrol & diesel price issue for what it is – a national crisis.  Here is the link…..suggested wording follows.  However, please feel free to use your own wording.  https://email.number10.gov.uk/Contact.aspx

  1. When you have sent the email as in point 1 above, please just write it out, put it in an envelope and post it to Rt Hon David Cameron MP   Prime Minister  10 Downing Street LONDON SW1A 2AA

In the coming days, we will be asking you to email your own MPs to back up our call for this debate.  Together, we can make this happen…….

Kind regards

Peter Carroll and the FairFuelUK Campaign Team.    A form of words to send to the Prime Minister
Dear Prime Minister

I am one of the more than 100,000 citizens who signed the FairFuelUK Government epetition on the issue of high fuel duty. I am shocked and disappointed to hear that there appears to be some difficulty in actually securing a date for the debate. It appears that the Back Bench Business Committee are saying that they do not have sufficient time allocated to debate this vital matter. The high price of petrol and diesel is driving people and businesses to ruin. I find it astonishing that time cannot be found to debate this subject which is of immense concern to millions of families and businesses and if resolved could reverse the stagnating economy and achieve real growth plus improve the sagging public morale.

I suggest that failure to rectify this situation will completely undermine the new epetition scheme and lead to a feeling that your Government and Parliament are not truly responding to the issues that are at the top of people's priorities.

I respectfully ask that you intervene personally, bang heads together and let the people have their debate on this vital issue,

Kind regards,
